BECK Blues traveller, rock
god, folk hero, popper, locker and funk soul brother...and of course sexxy
MF. That’s Beck. With a well deserved reputation for boundary breaking
- from the early 90’s anthem ‘Loser’ to the sub club humidity of Tropicallia
Beck has always been one step ahead of the pack. His releases have always
been the subject of great anticipation, especially true since the release
of the low-key Mutations. Beck’s new album ‘Midnite Vultures’ was released
on Geffen on November 15th.
One album, 11 tracks, a million ideas - Beck is back with what is already
being described as his best album yet.
Described by Beck as 'an album for the millennium', it’s his way of winding
up the loose ends of the past hundred years of music. While the ghosts
of previous incarnations hide in the shadows, Midnite Vultures echoes
with the sound of early electro, Motown soul and Memphis funk.
Opening track and first single Sexx Laws (released November 1st) is filled
with horns, banjo’s and slide guitar and sets the scene for another synaps-firing
trip through the mind of Beck. Get Real Paid is pure electro - bursting
with 808 squawks and beats, it’s a dancefloor classic in the making, while
Milk and Honey, with its guitar riff of huge proportions was born to grace
the stages of stadiums around the world.
Closing track Debra, a track that has been a staple of Beck’s live performances
in the past, brings the album to a close - the bleeding heart of the man
ripped from his soul. If there’s pain in art, then Beck is screaming.
